SAMWU condemns City of Tshwane’s non-payment of salaries
The South African Municipal Workers Union has noted with disappointment and agitation the non-payment of salaries by City of Tshwane today, 26 September 2022 as per employees’ contract of employment with the City. We have as a union engaged with the City’s management to get clarity on the situation and to demand clarity on the immediate payment of workers’ salaries.
The City has since indicated that there was a technical glitch experienced by the ABSA which is the City’s banker. According to the City, there are no cash flow problems faced by the City. As SAMWU, we call on the newly appointed Municipal Manager to take control and ensure that employees receive their salaries with immediate effect.
We have further noted that in addition to the technical glitches, there are problems in upper offices of the City wherein the Chief Finance Officer’s contract of employment was recently extended and has been failing in his duties towards the City as the employer, residents and the City’s employees who many of them could not report to duty as a result of the failure to ensure that salaries are paid on time.
As SAMWU, we are convinced that this situation is an indication that the City is collapsing due as people who hold positions of power are not performing their duties as they are supposed to. We, therefore, call on the City to immediately ensure that workers’ salaries are paid with immediate effect. We further demand that the City be held liable for the financial implications that workers will face such as failed debit fees.
