SAMWU DEMANDS JUSTICE FOR CONSTABLE RAMAABELE MOTHAPO AND DENOUNCES VIOLENCE AGAINST LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS
The South African Municipal Workers’ Union (SAMWU) in the Tshwane Region expresses its profound sorrow and indignation over the senseless murder of Constable Ramaabele Mothapo on Christmas Eve. Constable Mothapo, a devoted member of the Tshwane Metro Police Tactical Unit, tragically lost her life at the hands of her partner in Pretoria West.
SAMWU extends its deepest condolences to the Mothapo family, her colleagues, and all those whose lives were touched by her service and dedication. We share in their grief and pledge our unwavering support during this difficult time.
This abhorrent act is not an isolated incident. Across the nation, we have witnessed a disturbing surge in violence against law enforcement officers by those they loved and trusted. These brave men and women, who selflessly serve our communities, often face peril on the streets only to encounter danger in the supposed safety of their personal lives. This cannot and will not be tolerated.
We commend the swift and decisive action of the South African Police Service in tracking down and apprehending the suspect in Limpopo on 4 January 2024, who was found in possession of Constable Mothapo’s vehicle. Justice must prevail, and we will do everything in our power to ensure that the perpetrator is held accountable for this senseless act.
The loss of Constable Mothapo is a grim reminder of the growing epidemic of gender-based violence that continues to plague our nation. Many law enforcement officers have lost their lives at the hands of their partners—a harrowing reality that highlights the urgent need for systemic change. This is a call to action for all sectors of society to address the root causes of domestic violence and to protect those who serve and protect us.
As SAMWU, we will mobilise our members and the broader community to stand in solidarity when the perpetrator appears at the Pretoria Magistrates’ Court for the bail application. We firmly support the state prosecutor’s decision to oppose bail. This individual has not only stolen a life but has also demonstrated a clear intent to evade justice. A flight risk of this magnitude cannot be allowed to walk free.
To the family, friends, and colleagues of Constable Mothapo: your loss is our loss. We commit to honouring her memory by advocating for justice, calling for stricter measures to protect law enforcement officers, and addressing the broader societal issues that lead to such tragedies.
SAMWU stands united in the fight against gender-based violence, both within and beyond the workplace. We will not rest until justice is served and meaningful change is achieved.
Rest in peace, Constable Mothapo. Your bravery and dedication will never be forgotten.
