COSATU statement on the killing of SAMWU Limpopo Deputy Provincial Secretary, Comrade Roland Mani

The Congress of South African Trade Unions is deeply shocked to hear of the killing of SAMWU Limpopo Deputy Provincial Secretary, Comrade Roland Mani who was shot and killed in Thohoyandou yesterday. We send our deepest condolences to his family, friends and colleagues.

The federation is disturbed because Cde Mani's killing comes just days after yet another attempted assassination of SAMWU leader Cde Timson Tshililo, who is currently in the hospital.

COSATU is worried that many of the union leaders that are being mowed down by assassins are the ones who have been very vocal in fighting against the Vhembe District Municipality's toxic and corrupt relationship with the VBS Mutual Bank.

We welcome the decision by the Limpopo Provincial Commissioner to assemble a task team to investigate the killing of Comrade Mani.We call on the National Commissioner General Khehla Sithole and Minister Bheki Cele to give resources and necessary support to this special investigations team.

We agree with our affiliated union SAMWU that the two shootings are related as both victims are employees of the Vhembe District Municipality who have been anti-corruption crusaders.

COSATU will not be deterred in fighting crime and corruption; we shall continue to expose the rot and the shenanigans of all those who are stealing from the poor.

The government needs to ensure that the province of Limpopo does not allow these types of killings to spread as it happened in the province of KwaZulu Natal. They should nip it in the bud by hunting down and arresting all the responsible criminals.
