SAMWU calls for protection of workers following attacks in Tshwane.
The South African Municipal Workers’ Union (SAMWU) in the Tshwane Region is disturbed by the recent events in the City wherein municipal workers have been subjected to physical attacks by community members and driving school owners in Shoshanguve.
Employees of the City, especially those from Electricity, Roads and Transport and Water and Sanitation have recently been attacked by community members in Soshanguve when they deliver services. During some of these attacks, our members were robbed of their cellphones and other possessions.
It is unfortunate that these attacks continue even after there was a meeting between the City of Tshwane management, Ward Councillors and the community. SAMWU, therefore, calls on the City of Tshwane to ensure that workers are afforded a safe working environment to discharge their responsibilities.
The introduction of the online system by the department of transport has also created a challenge within the City of Tshwane licensing centers. Over the past days workers have been barred from accessing their offices by driving school personnel in and around Tshwane. In some instances, workers were taken out of their offices and some lost their belongings.
We hope that the meeting convened for Monday, 07 March 2022 will go a long way in resolving the impasse. In the interim, SAMWU calls on the Department of Transport and driving school association to agree on a dual system of both walk-ins and online to cater for various constituencies.
