SAMWU Rejects Facilitator’s Proposal on Salary and Wage Negotiations
The South African Municipal Workers’ Union (SAMWU) has today formally reported back on the mandate given by members following the presentation of the facilitator’s report in the fourth and last round of salary and wage negotiations. Following a rigorous consultation and mandate seeking process, members were presented with the facilitator’s proposal for salary and wages as the current agreement is nearing lapse.
Members across the country mandated the union’s negotiators to reject the proposal in the current form as it does not address the the issues which they currently face. This is the position which has been tabled at the South African Local Government Bargaining Council (SALGBC) currently underway until the 18th.
Parties in the SALGBC have therefore agreed that another meeting should be convened on the 6th and 7th June, bearing in mind that the current agreement lapses on June 30. When we began these negotiations, we strongly indicated and promised that we would not accept an agreement which does not have substantial increments for our members, a promise which we will stick to until the end.
The meeting in the Bargaining Council continues tomorrow wherein we expect a draft Wage Curve and Pension Funds Restructuring agreements to be concluded on. These draft agreements will be presented to our members for a final determination.
We will be using the period between now and the next meeting of the Bargaining Council to consult on the Wage Curve and Pension Fund Restructuring agreements along with a further mandate on the course of action with regards to salary and wage negotiations. We further thank our members for the patience which they have shown in these negotiations.
