SAMWU mourns the passing away of its Pinky Ntshangani Regional Chairperson, Comrade Solomzi Clifton Booysen.
The South African Municipal Workers’ Union (SAMWU) is saddened at the news of the passing away of its Pinky Ntshangani Regional Chairperson in the Eastern Cape, Comrade Solomzi Clifton Booysen. The Pinky Ntshangane region covers the Sarah Baartman District Municipality, the Blue Crane Route, Dr Beyers Naude, Makana, Ndlambe, Sunday River Valley, Kouga and Kou-Kamma Local Municipalities.
Comrade Booysen was mercilessly and brutally assassinated outside his home on the evening of the 22 September 2020 in what appears to be a political hit, just a month after celebrating his 41st birthday. At the time of his brutal murder, Comrade Booysen was in the employ of the Kouga Local Municipality’s Infrastructure Department.
Comrade Booysen was first elected SAMWU Pinky Ntshangane Regional Chairperson in 2008, re-elected to the same position in 2015 and again in 2019. Comrade Booysen was a leader of society, having been a community leader and led structures of the ANC and the ANCYL and school governing body.
A passionate lover of sports, in particular rugby and soccer, Comrade Booysen always had the interests of municipal workers at heart, he always ensured that worker issues are always attended to, he sacrificed his time and that of his family for the benefit of municipal workers and residents at large.
We call on law enforcement agencies to leave no stone unturned in solving this assassination, we want to see these criminals brought to book, their handlers must also face the full wrath of the law for having have robbed municipal workers of a dedicated servant, and most importantly for robbing the Booysen family of a husband and a father.
As municipal workers, we lower our banners in honour and reflection of the commitment, passion and love that Comrade Booysen had for municipal workers and the working class in general.
We send our heartfelt condolences to the Booysen family, colleagues, friends, municipal workers and the entire congress movement. The union leadership will be visiting the family shortly to formally convey condolences on behalf of municipal workers and members.
May his soul rest in peace!
